How to Reduce the Size of a Microsoft Word Document

 Introduction:

Mircosoft Word file sizes matter most when you need to share a Word document with others through email or WhatsApp. With a big file size, you can run into a problem when sending a document over emails, such as a challenge with internet speed or a restriction of 25MB from Microsoft Outlook or Gmail. Meanwhile, your recipients could run into issues when opening a sizable doc on their mobile devices.

Here are a few simple ways to reduce the size of a Word document to make it less bulky and more shareable.



1. Save in DOCX Format

Starting with Word 2007, documents now save in DOCX format instead of DOC. The only reason to use DOC is if you need backward compatibility with ancient word processing apps.

One of DOCX's benefits is far smaller file sizes. A document that's a few megabytes in DOC form would take up just a few hundred kilobytes as a DOCX.

When you save your Word documents, make sure to choose the DOCX format. If you're already working with a DOC file, open the File tab in Word and select Convert on the Info tab. You'll need to accept a prompt and provide a new file name.

2. Compress Images

Before you insert an image into a Word document, it is optionally to perform some edits using any image editor software. If you edit inside Word, it will retain the original version and waste space.

You should also use the Insert > Picture menu to add an image from your computer in a space-friendly format, like JPG, instead of pasting it in. When you paste, Word adds the image as a PNG or BMP, which both take up a lot of space.

Finally, on the Save As menu, you can select Tools > Compress Pictures and select a Resolution or E-mail for all of them. Depending on the document, you may be able to get away with lower-quality images to save more space.

Elon Musk Starlink in Nigeria its Implications

 Yes I read this news on Facebook from Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe about this new development, I was excited and happy that Nigeria will experience a new level of growth in all sectors just like Telco/GSM brought in 1999.


First I want to take a moment to review details about Starlink license with NCC (Nigerian government).
According to Nairametrics "The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed to Nairametrics that it has licensed Starlink, a satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX, providing satellite Internet access coverage to 32 countries. This licensing followed a visit to Nigeria by the company’s team in May last year. 
  • “The company received two licenses, which include the International Gateway license and Internet Service Provider (ISP) license, and will be trading as Starlink Internet Services Nigeria Ltd. According to NCC, the International Gateway license has a 10-year tenure while the ISP license is to last for five years. Both licenses take effect from May 2022 and may be renewed after the expiration.” NCC
  • Elated Elon Musk took to his Twitter handle to announce this development, which Nairametrics also confirmed from the NCC. 
  • With high speeds and latency as low as 20 minutes in most locations, Starlink enables video calls, online gaming, streaming, and other high data rate activities that historically have not been possible with satellite internet.
  • Users also have the option to take Starlink with them via the Portability feature or Starlink.

Starlink is a low latency broadband internet system created to meet the needs of consumers in rural areas with low internet penetration across the globe. In simpler terms, it delivers super-fast internet via satellites to rural areas. It is theoretically capable of delivering 150Mbps internet speeds to any place on the planet. All the customer needs is a clear view of the sky. 

Starlink enters a Nigerian Internet service provider space that is dominated by telcos like MTN and Airtel, as well as individual ISPs such as Spectranet, SMILE and others. 

Compared to existing similar internet plans in Nigeria which cost an average of $50, Starlink is a more expensive option costing $599 (~₦330,000) for a full kit, including a terminal, mounting tripod, and Wi-Fi router, then a $110 (~₦60,500) for preorder and monthly subscription. Its premium service costs about $2,500 (~₦1.375 million) for the full kit and $500 (~₦275,000) monthly.

This price range is deemed expensive for the average Nigerian, except it introduces a different offering for the Nigerian Market.

QUESTIONS/CONCERNS

1. Starlink requires a clear view of the sky to connect - in locations with obstruction to sky or weather conditions such as rain/thunder what will be the performance.


2. Your Starlink Kit arrives with everything you need to get online including your Starlink, wifi router, cables and base- how will starlink compete with setup and subscription cost with existing telecos in Nigeria.

Some time last week my colleague laptop had this error while trying to run or open Microsoft office 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

I carried out below steps to resolve the problem.

1. Go to control panel to uninstall existing office 365 application.

2. Restart the Windows after a successful uninstallation

3. Reinstall Microsoft Office 365 from installation media or download setup.

Alternatively online repair would have suffice but I recommend clean installation
